OPEIU Local 153

The American Federation of Labor chartered the Office and Professional Employees International Union in 1945. At the time of its founding, the membership of the Union numbered 22,000. The Union now counts 145,000 members and is one of the larger unions in the AFL-CIO.

Health Insurance Plan of New York and OPEIU Local 153 has had a harmonious relationship for over 50 years. Not only has their long-standing relationship continued, it has prospered with HIPA as well. Representing nearly 300 HIPA employees spanning several departments, HIPA’s Management team and local 153 continue to work closely to maintain our strong history of collaboration and cooperation.

Members of OPEIU Local 153 participate in the first and largest labor union in the United States and Canada dedicated to professional, technical and office workers. The union works to best represent all interests, both in and out of the workplace. Members are made of people who serve in both the public as well as private sectors, and have affiliation agreements with professionals around the country.
